THE HISTORY OF THE SUNSHINE COAST SQUARE DANCE CENTRE

The Sunshine Coast Square Dance Centre in Buderim has been active since 1985. The hall was specially built for square dancing. It is peacefully set amongst bush land at the end of Dixon Road Buderim, on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. It is the only purpose-built Square Dance Hall outside the USA.

Nev McLachlan is the Director & a Caller for the club and has been in this position since its formation in 1970. In this time he has taught many basic classes through to graduation. But square dancing is something that you go on learning, (different step movements) all the time.

Nev’s wife Bev is the Cuer (caller) for Round Dancing, also at this same hall, which she has been doing since 1982. Round Dancing is old time dance movements put together and danced to a caller (Cuer).

It’s very graceful and pretty to watch, Bev was cueing in Brisbane before coming to the Sunshine Coast and also has been teaching new classes on a regular basis.

Nev first started square dancing when he was just a teenager at school. He liked it so much he wanted his friends to learn. So after a time, he started a club called “Circle W” (Wynuum) in 1969. His introduction to calling was through a callers school and was a great success in the “QLD Amateur Callers Contest”, held in Brisbane.

Later he joined with the Square Dance Legend, Bernie Kennedy’s club, which became “Bar-K/Circle W” (Wynuum).
Nev also became resident caller for the Reg Linsday Show “Homestsead” which broadcast on QTQ. Channel 9. So he brought square dancing to the home of many people who now have become great dancers to this day.

Thanks to Nev and his dedication, dancing on the Sunshine Coast has been going for over 30 years.
