Thu 10 Feb 2011 The Searchers Sunshine Coast Function Centre 7.30pm Ages: 18+ In 1962 The Searchers were merely four kids making a few extra pounds playing small gigs
around their home town of Liverpool, providing the backing for a local C & W singer Johnny Sandon.
One year later, the singer having left to further his own solo career, The Searchers found themselves at number one in the
British charts with Sweets for My Sweet.
The Beatles had started the Mersey boom and a host of other combos from the north of England followed, to form what was to become the golden decade of British pop music.
Unlike many
of these other groups, The Searchers created their own highly individual sound, which later on influenced a host of performers who were just beginning to make their way into music. Artists such as Tom Petty, The Byrds, Marshall
Crenshaw and even The Boss¯ Bruce Springsteen, whose version of When You Walk In The Room, was a high spot in his stage show.
The soaring vocal harmonies and rich jangley sound of the twelve string guitar were to be adapted by
many who knew when they were on to a good thing. Tickets: $28 Ph: 5438 5800 www.sunshinecoastfunctioncentre.com.au

Sat 19 & Sun 20 Feb Pa & Ma Bendall Surf Contest Moffat Beach A long standing surfing contest for boardriders in memory of Caloundra surfing legends Pa & Ma Bendall. Organised by the Wind
N Sea Board Riders club this contest has been running for 37 years. Usually held at Moffat Beach but may vary due to wind and weather conditions. In 1974 the inaugural 'Pa' Bendall Memorial Contest was organised as a mark
of Respect for the Charles Ben (Pa) Bendall. 'Pa' is the grandad of surfing in Queensland. He and his wife Marjory (Ma) settled in Caloundra in the 1950's.There were only a handful of other surfers living locally at the
time, and Ma & Pa became the mother & father of surfing on the Sunshine Coast. Pa formed the invitational 'Moffateers' in 1966 as a club to promote integrity and sportsmanship in the sport of surfing. He encouraged
the surfing youth of the sunshine coast to maintain their good character by offering them free membership to the club. Using the club contests as training and conditioning for more challenging contests ; Pa encouraged the young
Moffateers to compete in regional, state and national championships. In 1973 Pa passed away and his funeral service was conducted overlooking his beloved Moffat waves and his ashes were scattered from a plan over the water. In
August 1973 a memorial plaque was unveiled; in what is know as the Pa Bendall Park, on Moffat Headland over looking the surf. The contest is a memorial to Pa's enthusiasm for surfing and his efforts in promoting the sport and
encouraging the young surfers of Caloundra and surfers worldwide. The first Pa Bendall Memorial contest was held at Moffat Beach on the 2nd and 3rd Of February 1974 in 3- 4 foot surf. First prize was $1500, the largest prise offered
for Any Australian surfing contest at the time. The competition attracted every professional surfer in the country including Wayne (Rabbit) Bartholomew, Simon Anderson and Hawaiian legend Gerry Lopez as well as hot local talent.
Since its inception the contest has been held for 36 consecutive years (8 as the Ma & Pa Bendall) and has been a spring board for many young surfers moving into the professional ranks
with past winners including Australian and World champions and legends. It has also made a significant contribution to the community fabric of Caloundra and helped raise the profile of the region through international publicity created
by the contest. More info: Ph: 0417 778 592 or email: peter@ontimeinternet.com

Sat 26 Feb Sara Storer with special guest Greg Storer Sunshine Coast Function Centre Caloundra 2pm Seated Show - All ages From the Carters to the Cashes and the
Chambers and many others whose surname don’t begin with a C - it’s a roots music tradition to keep things in the family. While it’s been a long time coming, Greg Storer has finally, quietly joined his award-winning
sister Sara in the singer/songwriter spotlight.
And talk to people about Sara Storer and the same words keep being used: real, unaffected, authentic. It’s partly a way of acknowledging that she’s lived the life she
sings about. And the same is already being said about Greg who will join his sister on tour to coincide with the release of their respective albums Calling Me Home: The Best Of Sara Storer€¯ and Backwater€¯, Greg’s
debut.
In a review of Backwater, Kim Cheshire, from Country Update Magazine, opines... With an accent that’s one part Texas and two parts Townsville, Storer regales us with the hard earned wit and wisdom that comes
from a life on the land, He’s obviously no novice when it comes to expressing himself lyrically and musically. While respected journalist and ABC broadcaster, Richard Glover, observes that Sara has a hungry writer’s
eye, her songs full of vivid, telling moments and narratives that seem to drop the listener into a freshly minted world. The voice that tells these tales is open and unguarded; the music seductive yet energised. Her songs speak with
great directness and immediacy, as if we had found ourselves on the road, or round the campfire, with the characters of the song.
Paul Kelly, Australia’s master-songwriter, may have best captured her unique talent: You
know she’s paid attention, he says, heard the bush waking up in the morning, listened to the worries thrashed out at the kitchen table, smelt dry summer wheat up close, dreamed of far away places in a bedroom with a window on a
big sky, driven miles on dirt and bitumen and fallen in and out of love. She’s found her own way to sing the stories that are all around her and then inside her bubbling out. She doesn’t copy over-emotive, fake sincere
twangy country singers from overseas. She’s found her own restraint and steel and lets her songs do their sweet, sly work. Tickets: Adults $28, Children $18 Ph: 5438 5800 www.sunshinecoastfunctioncentre.com.au
